Overpower. Overtake. Overcome.

Serena Williams. Either you know her, or you don’t. A lot of people only know her as the women who is a champion tennis player. The unbeatable Serena Williams. But she went through a lot of pain and suffering to get to the position she is in right now. Did you know that she was body shamed in the  middle of a very important game? Or that people brought her down just because of who she was? For countless days she was told. “You know, maybe you should like stop doing all this.” or “Hey, your good and all but your a women.” But Serena didn’t listen to anyone. She only listened to one person. And that person was her. She continuously told herself. ” I can do this, I am not going to listen to these people.”

Those words went a long way. If she didn’t believe her own words, she would never have won 23 grand slams(Grand Slams are the four most important tennis tournaments of the year, each tournament consisting of two weeks. The Australian Open in the middle of January, the French Open in May and June, Wimbledon is in June and July, and the US Open takes place in August and September)23 Grand Slams equal, 7 Australian opens, 3 French Opens, 7 Wimbledon matches, and 6 US Opens.

Almost every sports headline published today features “History is made when Serena Williams wins her 23rd Grand Slam.” Their is no way you could even be retorting her after everything she has doing in her life. What I value most about this extraordinary woman, is that  even when she was being brought down by other people’s voices of disapproval. She only obeyed the voice of her confident soul and mind. So please listen to these words. “I really think a champion is defined not by their wins, but by how they can recover when they fall.” – Serena Williams. She is definitely a champion.

Lindsey Stirling

When I am working on my art, writing, making a post, or homework. I love listening to music. But I especially love to listen to classic/pop music. A kind of classical music with a beat to it. One of my favorite artists who delivers that is Lindsey Stirling. Lindsey Stirling is a violinist, dancer, composer, and a performance dancer. She has a YouTube that she has been running since 2007, featuring choreographed music videos a long with her violin compositions. She not only does covers, but composes her own music and performs them as well. With millions of views in each video, she dominates the world with her violin in hand, pirouetting her way to stardom.

“Sometimes I think my head is so big because it is so full of dreams” – R. J. Palacio, Wonder

In fourth grade, our teacher had a huge collection of novels and books that she thought would interest “our expanding imaginations. But honestly those books were actually just comics and books that would bore you the first few minutes you read them, because the students weren’t enjoying the books she thought we would like, instead she brought in classic novels and other books that were actually quite interesting. (Dungeons, dragons, legends, Greek gods, and demigods are definitely things that would entertain me for hours.) But not exactly what the other students had in mind. So our teacher bought copies a new book. A book I didn’t know would change my perspective of how I saw the people around me.

The book had a a shiny cover, and the book itself smelled as if it was just printed. On the cover the background was a shade of sky blue. It also had an illustration of a boy, with black hair, and above his eye stood out the word Wonder. Wonder, that was the title of the book. The book was by the author R.J. Palacio. The book is about a boy, named August that lives in upper Manhattan. But a lot of people don’t know that, he was born with mandibulofacial dysostosis, a rare medical facial deformity. Living his life hiding behind the shadows of his baseball cap. Being home schooled for so many years he is insecure about the fact that he will so be going to Beecher Prep, a public school.

Throughout the book it has the point of view of multiple characters. Showing their thoughts and feelings, their experiences, and their back story’s. I love this book, it made me laugh, cry, and feel the pain and emotion of each and every character. So please read this book, and never lose your sense of wonder.

“When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind.” – R.J. Palacio, from Wonder

“In a gentle way, you can shake the world.” – Mahatma Gandhi

In third grade I had to write a report about a person that passed away that “left their mark on the world.” I brought home with me, a list of people that we were able to do also. I asked my dad who I should do. “Gandhi.” He replied. I asked my mom the same question she also responded with “Gandhi.” My mom and dad had both told me some information about him, I was really interested and wanted to learn more about him. I worked on the report for about 2 to 3 weeks. But I finally got to learn what I wanted to know, and more to.

Mahatma Gandhi was best known for bringing freedom to India. But not a lot of people knew how he did. He was a the preeminent leader for the Independence Movement, when the British ruled. Usually large acts like this usually start and end with physical combat. But that was not Gandhi believed. He instead had faith in the one thing that brought people together, peace. Instead of leading boycotts that would soon take a dark turn, he instead  organized a march. This act of rebellion was mainly showing disobedience against the taxation of salt production. Thus creating the Salt March. He led the parade of citizens with pride. Leading towards the sea to produce their own salt. “Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.”

With this act done, Mahatma Gandhi not only became peacemaker, but he became a person that dominated the hearts of people around the world, with his strong peaceful will and wit.

Thulasi

`“Kanmani, wake up…” Kanmani…”  My dad shaking my sleepy body as I groggily asked,

“What is it?”

“The baby is coming.”

“Ok” I responded

“Yup”

“Wait WHAT?!” I screamed.

“COME ON LET’S GO!” He roared.

I rushed out of bed. Grabbing my satchel and putting on my jacket and jeans,” It was exactly 12:15, when my mom had contractions, 15 minutes after the new year started, and I only got 2 hours of sleep, but I was wide awake when I was awakened. I rushed downstairs and put on my shoes. Waiting, and waiting, and waiting some more. But then,“KANMANI!” Don’t just stand there, help your mother! My dad said” “Ok, ok, jeez.” I muttered under my breath.

I went to my mother and helped her with her shoes( well attempting to) while my brother  was singing.”The baby is coming, the baby is coming, the baby is coming. HOORAY!” I realized as the oldest I was the one my siblings look up to. Our family could be defined by just one thing: A pod. Like a pod a dolphins, we all stay together, we all look up to each other, and we all love each other. With another little dolphin swimming into the pod, it would be even more big, and more fun.

5 minutes later, we were all inside the car buckled and ready to go. My dad started the car and we were on the road, playing religious music along the way, creating a peaceful environment for everyone along the way. . I continued asking my mom if she was okay, and for her to breath,  We continued to drive, my little brother sleeping and snoring away. We pulled up to the front of the emergency entry area. A security guard asked, “Are you going to the delivery room?”  My mother nodded. The security guard told us “Take a right and go into the elevator to the 3 floor.”

We all started walking, I was holding on to my mother’s hand, gripping onto her tightly. We arrived at the front desks at the 3rd floor. My parents were talking to the a lady at the front desk, my dad holding on to my brother. I looked around, I remember the building from when my brother was born, but the entire space felt new to me. 15 minutes later, a nurse escorted us into one of the delivery rooms, she helped my mom into the bed. The nurse asked my mom questions like, “Are you taking any medications?” or “On a scale of 1-10, how much pain do you feel?” The nurse was very nice. She told my dad that we all had to wait in the family waiting room that was down the hall, for a few minutes. So I grabbed my things and headed to the waiting room.

It was exactly how I remembered it. Squishy couches, a pine wood table, and large tv. I took out my earbuds, got out my mom’s phone and played music on Spotify. But then my dad asked me, “Kanmani, can you go check if they are ready yet?” I walked down the hall and peeked inside. They didn’t look ready. I went back to the waiting room and told my that they weren’t ready. The third time I checked my dad and brother came in also. The nurse was asking my mom more questions. My dad and my brother sat on the recliner, and I sat on the rocking chair, reading the book The Hunger Games on my Kindle. The nurse turned out the lights in the room. As my brother, mother, and father slept, I continued reading, and reading, and reading some more. Page 128, page 278,  page 373. But then “Honey, here’s a blanket and pillow.” “They are really warm, and it’s very cold, so here.” I realized that I had fallen asleep with my Kindle in my hand. “Oh thank you so much, that is very kind of you!” I replied with gratitude in my tone. “No problem sweetheart!” She replied.

After the nurse had left I tried sleeping. But I couldn’t. I got up and checked the time on my dad’s phone. It read 3:22 am. So I went back to the(slightly uncomfortable) rocking chair. I tried many sleeping positions to ease my uncomfort. But none of them worked. When I finally found a sleeping position that brought ease to my back and neck, I finally slept a good long sleep( That I very much need). But then I woke up to find that the nurse turned on the lights and was checking on my mom. When the nurse was done, I couldn’t fall asleep again. Is this what it is like for a gynecologist, or any person  in the medical field? Do they stay late and take shifts?

Thinking about all of this. The whole experience of going to appointments for my mom and the baby really taught me a lot of things that not only were surprising, but fascinating. The doctors and nurses have codes for specific things. For example, “magnolia skin” stands for a specific skin type similar to what his or her sister or brother had as a baby. Well that’s what I have heard. What doctors and nurses do are really interesting. They never know if they will find a cure for a disease, or even discover a new one that they have to figure out. I thought about it for the rest of the night. Maybe I could study and work for a goal like this.

By the time I had fallen asleep, the nurse told my dad that we had to go back to the family waiting room again because it was time for the delivery to begin. We went into the waiting room, bringing blankets and pillows with us. Even the couch was MUCH more comfortable than the rocking chair, I still couldn’t sleep. My baby sister was coming! It was somewhere around 7:55. So we waited, and waited. I kept asking my dad, “Dad, is she ready yet?” and he always responded with a very irritated “NO!”

A few minutes later, the nurse that was helping my mom came in. “Your mother is doing very good, and she is doing such a great job.” she said. “I am now going home because my shift just ended.” Your mother will probably be done pretty soon.” You should check in with the nurses that are up front in about 15 minutes.” “It has been a pleasure working with her, bye!” Before she left, I slipped a small note into her pocket. I wrote it when everyone else was sleeping. It read: Thank you so much for being so kind, not only to my mother, but to my brother, father, and I as well. We all very much appreciate your hospitality, and kindness.

With Love,

I sat back down. About 20 minutes passed. Then a different nurse came in. “She’s ready!”  YES! Finally! I walked faster and faster. Like a child seeing a bunny in the forest. I was the first one to get inside. I walked in, my dad, and brother trailing behind me.

Then I finally saw her. My sister. The person I have been waiting to meet for ages. I walked up next to my mom’s bed, and looked closer. She had a little button nose and big brown eyes. She had really thin eyebrows, and a forest full of hair. She was the cutest thing I ever seen in my life. She looked exactly like I did as a baby. Just the sight of her little face brought tears into my eyes, I quickly wiped them away.

Two weeks later: “DAD, CAN YOU GET THULASI’S LITTLE TOWEL PLEASE!” My little sister had just puked a little bit on me. As I wiped away what was left of her puke, I started thinking. One word to describe my little sister is, feisty. When she gets really mad, like she will seriously get MAD. But it is so hard not to laugh because she does the cutest face. But the feel of having a little baby, especially a tough little baby girl, is just amazing, and messy.

“Don’t go gentle into that good night.”

So I recently read the book series Matched, a dystopian/romance series by the author Allie Condie. It takes place in a utopian society, that is tightly controlled by the government. From what you eat, to when you die. Even you will be your life partner. Cassia Reyes, a 17 year old teen seems to have a glitch in her matching system. Even though this is a young adult book, it is still a really good book that will definitely catch a bookworms eye. (Below is a poem that is shown in the book.)

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on that sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Percy Jackson is one of my favorite book series’s. It has fantasy, legends, mythical creatures, and adventure. But what I like best about the series though, is that it’s accuracy in the legends, and how the author defines and explain each and every myth or story told by each character. Rick Riordan(the author) creates an atmosphere in each book made up of suspense, mystery, and of course fantasy. Even though I haven’t actually seen all of the movies that were based on the books, I saw clips and trailers(of course I did), I actually was really impressed on the special effects and how they filmed it. So you should definitely check out the movies to. If you have read all the books, please comment on which one was your favorite. (Mine has to be The Mark of Athena).

My Friend’s Blog

My friend has just created a blog of her own called Experience. In this blog you will find various posts about past experiences, that not only taught her viewers and herself lessons, but hilarious moments we will all be able to relate to. So please check out her website srisubi.blogspot.com  and give her your support, she will really appreciate it.

Nebula

So since last year, I have been writing a novel called  Nebula. It is about two teens who will go into space. This is the summary I wrote before I wrote the book. Enjoy!

As I looked up from my bay window, I saw the billions of stars dotting the night sky, and the moon high above, giving light to the ground underneath it, as if it was a mother giving it’s child warmth from the cold. And as I watched comets fly by I continued staring upward at the night sky, my yearning was so strong that I instantly forgot where I was, I blocked out the sound around me, as if deep in thought. My best friend Miles was beside me as well. It was easy to tell that he was thinking of the same thing.

I‘m just your ordinary 14 year-old, who wants to be an astronaut. But I’m not those types of people who just say that they want to be it and do nothing about it.  I mean come on! I actually do something about it. I work hard to reach my goals and my dreams. Especially this one. I study books, go on websites, sometimes I skip lunch and spend my free period, in the library reading and checking out books about astronomy, the universe, and books about the Sun and the other planets. To be an astronaut, you have to know these three subjects. Math, biological and physical science, and engineering. Luckily I have learned and studied every book or website, giving ANY information about one or all of these three subjects.

People say that Miles and I are crazy to want to go into space, saying it’s dangerous, and that I could possibly kill myself just lasting an hour up there.( That is scientifically inaccurate thank you very much.) I may be shy and quiet, but I have something that they didn’t believe I had. Hope. Being an astronaut was my dream ever since I looked up at the stars for the first time. Ever since then, I never gave up on my dreams. A few days ago, the most unpredictable thing happened, and it changed my life forever. I’m Alya, and I believe.

Open Your Eyes

So if you have been reading my blog ever since it started, then you probably know that I care very strongly about the fact that, most people underestimate the world. We live in a place full of beauty and exhilaration. And yet we waste it away by spending our lives in a bubble. A bubble that only lets in things that are connected to things such as social media, makeup, and selfies. People now days don’t go past their comfort zones, they don’t even consider stepping outside to look out at the beautiful world that appears in front of them. So I encourage you to open your eyes.

Open Your Eyes

By Kanmani Harivenkatesh

Open your eyes, there’s a whole world out there, put down your fear and open your heart, look out the door, and smell the fresh air.  ‘Cause there’s a whole world out there just waiting for you to open your eyes and take a deep breath.

There’s a place that I know, that will always be in my heart, a place that opens up to me and says “Come here and have an adventure with me, please, have a heart.

Because it is not only a world of buildings and factories. But a place full beaches and ocean breezes creating a home for me.

I know a world that’s just the tree’s and the sky, calming my soul and inspiring my eyes. A place that will keep my troubles away, and make me be another soul with the sky and the renegades.
